Staff Development Director

Qualifications

  1. Registered Nurse (RN) License

    • Must hold an active, unencumbered RN license in the State of Connecticut.

    • Verified through the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH).

  2. Long-Term Care Experience

    • At least 1 year of experience in a skilled nursing facility or long-term care setting.

    • Experience as a charge nurse, supervisor, or unit manager is a plus.

  3. Staff Education or Clinical Training Experience

    • Prior experience providing in-services, conducting skills evaluations, or leading educational programs is highly preferred.

    • Knowledge of adult learning principles and training delivery methods.

  4. Knowledge of State & Federal Regulations

    • Familiarity with:

      • Connecticut DPH regulations

      • CMS Requirements (F-tags related to training: F726, F947, F880, etc.)

      • Infection control standards

      • OSHA training and documentation practices

  5. Strong Communication & Leadership Skills

    • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse staff (CNAs, LPNs, RNs, non-clinical).

    • Capable of leading meetings, conducting presentations, and coaching staff.

  6. Organizational and Documentation Skills

    • Must be proficient in maintaining training logs, licensure records, and competency checklists.

Responsibilities

1. Orientation & Onboarding

  • Develop and conduct orientation programs, mandatory in-services, reviews of nursing skills, and prepare documentation related to employee probationary evaluations.

  • Ensure staff are trained on:

    • CT DPH regulations

    • Infection control

    • Emergency procedures

    • Abuse and neglect reporting (per CT’s mandated reporter laws)

    • Resident rights and HIPAA

2. In-Service Education

  • Schedule and conduct regular in-service trainings (monthly or as required).

  • Planning, organizing, directing, and monitoring the education and training program of all staff members.
  • Collaborating and providing advice to specific departments regarding employees' educational/training needs.
  • Ensuring that in-service programs shall be pertinent to care and service topics that directly relate to the current needs of their patient population.
  • Ensuring the provision of all training and education required by the Quality Assurance Committee, this Consent Agreement, and/or by the INC

3. Clinical Competency & Skills Assessment

  • Perform annual skills assessments for all nursing staff.

  • Supervise and document return demonstrations and remediation as needed.

  • Ensure CNA skills meet state competency requirements.

4. Continuing Education & Certification Tracking

  • Track and manage CNA recertification and continuing education (CEUs) for licensed nurses.

  • Ensure staff maintain valid licenses per CT DPH guidelines.

  • Maintain accurate training records and documentation for audits.

5. Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure all training is compliant with:

    • Connecticut Public Health 

    • CMS 

    • OSHA and CDC infection prevention standards

  • Prepare staff for DPH inspections and federal surveys.

6. Policy & Procedure Education

  • Train staff on facility policies and updates (e.g., new fall risk protocols).

  • Collaborate with nursing administration to revise protocols as needed.

7. Leadership & Mentorship

  • Support and coach staff to improve care delivery.

  • Encourage professional growth and identify training opportunities.

  • Serve as a liaison between nursing, administration, and HR for training needs.

8. Quality Assurance Involvement

  • Participate in QAPI meetings and audits.

  • Participating in quality assurance meetings to discuss potential problems involving the in-service education.
  • Analyze incident trends and develop training interventions to improve resident outcomes.
